We had a MOM 2005 reporting database which had not been archiving correctly and had grown to the point that there wasn’t enough free disk space to run the grooming process, due to increases in the size of the log files. Based on business requirements and hardware constraints the decision was made to trim down the content of the reporting database down to 35 days from what was originally data that was more than 500 days old. The original database size was approximately 55 GB with no free space, after successful grooming it was moved down to .5 GB (prior to re-activating the DTS package to transfer from the Operations database to the reporting database).

To accomplish this, we took the following high level process (all scripts referred to are included in full below):

Identify the count of each of the 6 fact tables using the "Table Count" script, and keep track of those statistics going forward.

Identify the oldest data in the tables using the "Oldest Date" script.

Determine the date difference between the oldest date and the current date with the "Date Diff" script.

Set the grooming interval to higher than the highest date using the "Set Grooming" script. This is done to ensure the grooming process will work as long as there is no data that needs to be groomed.

Verify the change tot he grooming settings with the "Check Grooming" script.

Start the reporting grooming job (called SCDWGroomJob) in the SQL Agent jobs section of the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager.

When the job (hopefully!) succeeds, run the "Truncate Log" script to free up some of the transaction log space.

Change the grooming setting to slightly less than the highest difference so that the next grooming job will be configured to actually groom out data.

Re-run steps 5 though 8 for the new setting.

Continue this process with decreasing values (the oldest data in the database we were working through was 508 days!). For that particular environment we were grooming settings which decreased from: 700, 500, 400, 350, 275, 200, 125, 35.

Finally we were able to decrease the size of the reporting database through the "Shrinkfile" script.

Last, w reactivated the scheduled task to move data from the Operations database to the Reporting database and started growing the data again; but this time up to a maximum of 35 days.

Fact Table Statistics: 700 Days 400 Days 350 Days 275 Days

The document is included as part of the download available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/momprodconnectors.mspx, HP Openview 1.0 Connector. There is also an Engryo MOM to HP OpenView connector, but this particular document focuses on the HP OpenView 1.0 Connector.

The following procedure focuses on the steps required to create a test environment. It relies heavily on the document contained within the download.

Install and configure a MOM 2005 environment. It is assumed you have MOM 2005 SP1 installed and working.

Install and configure HP OpenView. A downloadable 60-day trial version is available at http://www.openview.hp.com/products/ovowin/download.html. You will need to create a HP Passport to download the software.

On an OpenView server, install Internet Information Services (control panel, add/remove programs, add/remove windows components).

Install the trial version of HP OpenView. Click Next to continue, check "Console, Server and Agents" on the second screen. If the prerequisites check Ok, click Next to continue. Click Ok on the note about WMI and WWW services restarting. Take the default option to "Create the local database server automatically" (MSDE). Take the default to "Create database files" and click Next to continue. Enter a SA password, click Next to continue. Accept the license agreements and click Next. Take the default destination folder locations and click Next to continue. Enter passwords for the groups and users defined and click Next. Click Ok to accept the account screen. Finally click Install on the Ready to Install screen. Click Next when the installation is completed.

Install the MCF on the MOM Management Server and verify its functiionality by accessing the URL: http://[ComputerName]:[port] I

Download and install the Java Runtime environment on the HP OpenView server available at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html.

Now, install the HP OpenView Interconnect on the HP OpenView server. We could not get this to install - it failed when trying to run the program and would continue to ask for a location to extract the files from. This actually was a sign that the data file was corrupt. HP provided an alternate location to download the file from. The valid version of the file (ovi_34_install.exe) ran correctly.

Reference Http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885720 to change the registry configuration on the HP OpenView server (regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft subkey, and then click ProductConnector, MOMservers=http://mom-server:1271/Connectorservice.asmx).

Restart the MOM to HP OVO Connector Product Service and validate that you can browse to the URL which you put into the MOMServers registry value.

Before you forward your first alert make sure that you do not already have an alert resolution state of 203 defined. If you do, change any active alerts that are in that state to another state (such as new or acknowledged), and then change your alert resolution state of 203 to a different number. As part of the process of using the connector it will create its own alert resolution state of 203 which will be called "HP OpenView Operations."

On the MOM server, copy the "Forward Alets to HP OVO" alerts from the management pack to the management pack that you want to alert from. In this case, it was copied to the Microsoft Windows Servers Base Operating System\Windows 2003\Core Systems Components and Services area. On the alert criteria tab, change the "only match alerts" option to restruct to this area (Microsoft Windows Server Base Operating System\Windows 2003\Core System Components and Services). Enable the alert and commit your changes.

Stop a service to fail to activate an alert and it appeared on both the HP OpenView console and the MOM console.

We have included two screenshots. The first is a screenshot of the HP OpenView console with an alert that was sent via the MOM Server over the connector (Monarch). The second is a screenshot of the MOM Operator console alert details for the alert sent to HP OpenView.

Microsoft’s Availability Management Pack (AR MP) can help you identify servers with unexpected outages. The MP tracks server availability over a period of time and uses reports to track trends. You can use these reports to identify causes for both planned and unplanned downtime.

Most of Microsoft’s management packs are installed by extracting files (.akm and .xml files) from a downloaded package. The AR MP is a bit different as it has four separate pieces:

Database components

Management Pack file (.akm)

MMC snap-in

Report file (.rdl)

When you extract the files, you get two MSI installer files in addition to the akm and rdl components:

MOM-MRAS.msi – this MSI should be run on the MOM Reporting server system that hosts the SystemCenterReporting database. It extracts into the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Reliability Analysis Reporting\MomReliabilityAnalysisReporting directory by default. This file installs the database components (database tables and a DTS job)

MRAS_MP_UI.msi – the MSI installs the Availability Reporting MMC snap-in.

Although the akm creates a number of rule groups, it does not link any computer groups to these rule groups, which is required for the rules to function. You will want to either use a custom computer group or link the rules to the Microsoft Windows Servers computer group. Here is where things start go get exciting. Documentation in the Availability Reporting Management Pack Guide states computer groups should be linked to the following rule groups:

Microsoft SQL Server Events

Microsoft SQL Server 2000

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

System Events

Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2003 Servers

Unfortunately, without version 005.0.5000.000 or above of the MP, linking the groups as suggested above does not generate any reports! As Microsoft discusses in support document #914989 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914989/), the workaround at that time was to associate the computer groups with the top-level rule. Microsoft released a substantial update to the Availability Reporting MP at the end of August 2006. The updated version appears to have resolved the computer group issues so the original documentation now does represent the correct mapping.

For obvious reasons, this makes it important to know which version of the management pack you are working with. To date, Microsoft has released three versions of this MP. Since there are multiple parts to the management pack, just checking the version of the rule group in the Administrator console is not enough.

Microsoft suggests running a SQL Server query, documented in KB 924633 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924633/). The query has the following syntax:

SELECT * FROM MRAS_MRASInstallVersion

The query returns values for two important fields:

TableVersion (to determine the table schema version)

ProcVersion (tells you the stored procedure schema version)

If you have the August 2006 version of the Availability Reporting MP, the TableVersion Value is 1.0, the ProcVersion is 1.8, and the akm file version is 05.0.5000.000. Specifically:

Current releases of the Availability Reporting Management Pack have a TableVersion value of 1.0.

The first issue we ran into was just getting it installed. The installation failed unless we included the correct SharePoint Virtual Server information which for us is highlighted below. The Virtual Server Physical Location defaulted correctly.

SharePoint Virtual Server (including port)

http://monarch:81

Virtual Server Physical Location:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

Next we had to change the config.web file for SharePoint (for us located under C:\Inetpub\SharePoint), from the following:

     <trust level="Full" originUrl="" />

To this:

     <trust level="WSS_Minimal" originUrl="" />

And do an IISreset.

Now we could add the WebPart to the Sharepoint (or WSS) site, but it would error out when we attempted to configure it by pressing the “Show MOM 2005 Property ToolPane” button. With significant help from Microsoft we made the following change.

Edit the config.web file for SharePoint (for us located under C:\Inetpub\SharePoint), to add the following information just after the </configSections> tag:

<runtime>

     <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1">

      <dependentAssembly>

        <assemblyIdentity name="microsoft.web.ui.webcontrols"

                          publicKeyToken="31BF3856AD364E35"

                          culture="neutral" />

        <!-- Redirecting to version 5.0.2749.5 of the assembly. -->

        <bindingRedirect oldVersion="5.0.2749.0"

                         newVersion="5.0.2911.0"/>

      </dependentAssembly>

     </assemblyBinding>

  </runtime>

Next do an IISreset.

You may also need to copy the microsoft.web.ui.webcontrols.dll file to the SharePoint bin directory (for us it was C:\inetpub\SharePoint\bin). After this we were able to configure the WebPart!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-04-14T21:36:07Z</dcterms:modified>

MOM 2005 Security Accounts

MOM 2005 Accounts: What are they, what they do, and what permissions do they need?

We’ve seen and run into quite a bit of confusion about the different security accounts that exist in MOM 2005. Specifically what accounts exist for MOM, what they do, and what permissions do they need to do it. The following is an attempt to provide a summary of this information based upon our own experiences. For Microsoft’s best practices you can refer to the Microsoft MOM security guide which is available at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=33035.

Most of the debate revolves around the Action accounts that are used within MOM. The recommended approach is to use Local System (the Network Service on Windows 2003 is recommended over Local System) to provide the required functionality. The MOM Agent Action accounts should be run as Network Service unless the account cannot effectively be given the permissions it requires based on management packs deployed to that system. As an example, the SQL Server management pack requires access to various databases which will not be available unless the Local System/Network Service account is given permission to those databases. We can think of more than one organization which was not comfortable with a system account having that level of permissions into their databases.

The following is a summary of the security accounts in MOM, what they do, and the recommended permissions. Basically you have to have an account with permissions to deploy the agents (the Management Server Action account is recommended) and one which will have access rights to the MOM databases (the MOM DAS account). For more detailed information on these, our upcoming MOM 2005 Unleashed book provides quite a bit more than what is listed below.

• Management Server Service account (the MOM Service account)

– What does it do? Communicates with the agents, runs local agent on the management server

– What type of account should I use? Local System/Network Service

•         Management Server Action account

– What does it do? Installs/uninstalls agents, runs server-side responses on the management server, computer discovery, agentless operational data gathering, runtime tasks from the MOM console

– What type of account should I use? domain admin, or local admin for each server to install an agent on

•         MOM DAS account

– What does it do? Controls access to data in the OnePoint database

– What type of account should I use? domain account, permissions to the OnePoint database (permissions are configured by the MOM setup program)

•         MOM Reporting account

– What does it do? Data transfer between the Operations and Reporting databases

– What type of account should I use? Use the “MOM DAS” account
